The reaction from Palestinians was mixed Wednesday as they responded to news about a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with some expressing mistrust and others hopeful that their loved ones would be released.

“This is a fake truce. They announce it and then they lie to people,” said Ibtissam al-Ejla.

“They make them move then they strike. This is not a life, we’re not used to this. Our children run around appalled. This is so unfair.”

Another Palestinian woman who is the mother of a woman in Israeli custody said she was anxious to learn whether her daughter would be released.

“When I started to hear that they are serious and I heard countries got involved to get the deal done, thank God, I said, there will be a deal and it’s happening,” said Sameera Dwayyat.

The Qatari and Egyptian-mediated agreement will pause the war for four days, enabling the transfer of more humanitarian aid.

During that period, Hamas has agreed to free 50 women and children who were among the some 240 people taken hostage in the Oct. 7 attack. In return, Israel will release a number of inmates from Israeli security prisons.
