Israel-Hamas: Airstrikes in Rafah raise fears of imminent ground assault

Israel bombed at least four homes in Rafah on Wednesday, raising new fear among the more than a million Palestinians sheltering in the last refuge on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip that a long-threatened ground assault could be coming.

Two days after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution demanding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the release of hostages, the conflict in the Gaza Strip has not stopped and Palestinians continued to bury their dead.

Meanwhile, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese presented a report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and said that “Israel cannot behave as it does as an apartheid state and face no consequences,” adding that she does not question “the existence of the State of Israel.”

In Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his cancellation of a planned visit to Washington by top aides this week was meant to show Hamas that Israel would not bend to growing international pressure to halt operations. "It was a message first and foremost to Hamas: 'Don't bet on this pressure, it's not going to work,'" he said, adding that he thought the U.S. decision in the Security Council was “a very, very bad move.
