Israel-Gaza conflict: What are the potential consequences of an Israeli ground offensive?

Fears of an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza are increasing, following waves of retaliatory airstrikes by Israel in response to a deadly Hamas attack on Oct. 7.

This has led to pain and suffering for many Palestinian civilians, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to eliminate Hamas after the militant group's attack on Israel.

However, an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza would not be the first, and a retired general who commanded an observer force during the last offensive warns that this military action could be much bigger and bring greater risks.

Global's Nathaniel Dove spoke to a retired general who served in the area during the last Israel-Gaza conflict about what a ground offensive could look like and what the potential consequences could be.
