India: violent protests erupt after army removes employment guarantee

India's opposition Congress party is demanding the goverment rollback a new scheme to recruit soldiers into the armed forces.

Congress workers staged sit-ins across various locations in protest at what they say is a move that jeopardises national security and the future of young people. On June 14, the government had announced the so-called 'Agnipath' or 'Path of Fire' scheme which seeks to recruit soldiers, sailors and airmen into the armed forces for just a four year tenure.
