India tunnel collapse: Rescue operations in final stages to extract trapped workers

Rescuers hope to drill through the last third of the debris blocking a collapsed tunnel in the Indian Himalayas by early on Thursday to reach 41 workers trapped for 10 days, an official said on Wednesday.

Rescuers have been battling to pull out the men stuck in a 4.5 kilometre tunnel in the mountainous Uttarakhand state since it caved in early on Nov. 12. Authorities have said all men are safe, with access to light, oxygen, food, water and medicines provided down a tube.

"When we talked to them (the trapped workers), it could be inferred from the conversation that they are in a state of good mental health and are motivated,” Uttarakhand Government and Nodal Officer Secretary Neeraj Kharwal said. “We wanted to tell you (reporters) that sufficient quantities of food have reached them."

Officials have not said what caused the collapse, but the region is prone to landslides, earthquakes and floods. Efforts to bring the men out have been slowed by challenges in drilling in the mountainous terrain.
