Family members of the 41 workers trapped in a tunnel in India said they were relieved on Tuesday, after rescuers made progress and managed to establish the first video contact.

Rescuers are set on Tuesday to resume drilling horizontally through a 60-metre (195-ft) pile of debris to push through a pipe large enough for the trapped men to crawl out. A tunneling expert present at the site said work was being done to create safe areas within the tunnel.

Sunita, who only provided her first name, said the trapped men were “okay” after she managed to speak to her brother-in-law, Birendra Kisku, who is among the group.

The men have been stuck in the 4.5-km (3-mile) tunnel in Uttarakhand state since it caved in early on November 12. Authorities have not said what caused the cave-in, but the region is prone to landslides, earthquakes, and floods.

Doctors and mental health experts say the trapped workers should practice yoga and meditation to cope with the anxiety of a cramped space.
