Indian farmers burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hoisted black flags on Wednesday to mark six months of their campaign against deregulation of agriculture markets.

"We are expressing our anger today and will burn Indian Prime Minister Modi's effigy following the call of farmer groups. Until the movement is over, we are not budging from here. We will either win or die," one farmer protest leader said.

Indian government leaders had appealed to farmers to call off the mass protest for fear it could prove a viral "super-spreader" event as the country's overall death toll from COVID-19 crossed 300,000 on Monday.
