People gathered Wednesday near a volcano that erupted near Iceland's capital of Reykjavik as lava shot into the air from various fissures in the ground.
Video uploaded to social media showed people taking photos and video as lava and smoke offered a vast show of fiery explosions.
The eruption occurred after several days of earthquake activity, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office and took place just 25 kilometres from the capital. Iceland frequently experiences earthquakes and has high volcanic activity as it is located on the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, which move in opposite directions.
