A volcano erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula near Iceland's capital on Monday. Lava and clouds of smoke gushed out of a 700-metre-long crack in the earth.

Aerial video showed the bubbling red-hot lava cascading down the side of the mountain slopes.

There was an eruption in the same volcanic site in 2021 which had been dormant for the previous 800 years.
