Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, will speak on Thursday in Kyiv following his visit to Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

Grossi's remarks come a day after he said the IAEA would send teams of experts to all four of Ukraine's nuclear plants to reduce the risk of severe accidents as Russia's war against Ukraine continues.

The IAEA's permanent presence at the plants, with at least 11 staff in total, marks an unprecedented expansion for the agency. IAEA technicians will also be at Chernobyl, the now-defunct plant that was the site of the deadly nuclear accident in 1986.

The move by the IAEA follows a weekend missile strike on an apartment building in the southeastern city of Dnipro that killed 45 civilians, and a helicopter crash Wednesday at a kindergarten in the Kyiv area that killed the country's interior minister and about a dozen other people.
