More than 700 people were detained across Russia at protests against mobilization and the war in Ukraine on Wednesday, a rights group said, hours after President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia's first military draft since World War Two.
“I won't die for Putin!” one protester shouted at a police officer in Novosibirsk, as many people were seen being arrested in the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg while shouting "No to war!"
The independent OVD-Info protest monitoring group said it was aware of detentions in at least 36 different cities. Unsanctioned rallies are illegal under Russia's anti-protest laws.
