Police in Rochester, New York, are being slammed for handcuffing and pepper-spraying a nine-year-old girl while she was in the back of a police vehicle.

Local reports state police were called in for ‘family trouble’ involving a potentially stolen vehicle. On arrival, officers were approached by the girl’s parents, who feared she would hurt herself and others. The girl tried to run away but was apprehended by officers on a nearby street. The officers involved claim they put the girl in cuffs ‘for her own safety’, and at the request of her parents. When the child would not comply, refusing to put her feet in the police car, officers said the situation ‘required an officer to use an irritant on the minor’. She was taken to the hospital and later released to her family.

Rochester Police Captain Mark Mura has said the incident is currently under review. He explained that the initial call was about a woman having a dispute with her boyfriend who took her vehicle from the home.

Mayor Lovely Warren and several city council members have expressed their shock and anger at the incident.
