Hundreds of people were evacuated overnight Monday with many more facing the risk of having to leave their homes as New Zealand's Canterbury region saw heavy rains cause widespread flooding.

At least 300 homes were evacuated, with water levels rising in rivers in a "one-in-100-year deluge," according to local reports.

Several highways, schools and offices have been closed and New Zealand's Defence Forces deployed helicopters to rescue some people stranded.
