A national state of emergency was declared in New Zealand as Cyclone Gabrielle brought widespread flooding, landslides and huge ocean swells, forcing evacuations and stranding people on rooftops.

About 225,000 people were left without electricity, while dozens of supermarkets closed. Farmland could be seen inundated with flood water as rivers overflowed creating havoc near the east coast of the country's North Island.
