In a historic decision voted upon in Versailles on Monday, France has officially enshrined the right to have an abortion in its constitution. French MPs and senators of France’s two houses of parliament backed the bill by a whopping 780 votes against 72, making them the first country to do so since Yugoslavia.

“Our vote today has the sense of recognition of abortion as a fundamental human right, since the threat of regression continues to weigh on women's rights,” French lawmaker Mathilde Panot said on Monday.

Though abortion is a widely accepted choice and practice in country — and has been legal there since 1975 — the decision left many divided.

“I don’t think we have the right to put to death a living thing that has begun its life. I was 12 weeks old in my mother’s belly, too, and it makes me very sad to think that someone might have stopped me from living," a protestor in Paris said.

“We’re ahead of the curve [on women’s rights], we’re taking a historic step to protect women in the long term,” Deputy Mayor of Saint-Denis Oriane Filhol said.
