A major Canada-U.S. border rule change came into effect at midnight on Saturday. Canada and the United States have agreed to implement the Safe Third Country Agreement across the entire shared land border, to deter irregular border crossings at unofficial entries like Roxham Road. As Mike Drolet reports, experts are concerned crossings will still happen – but in a more dangerous way.

The border wasn’t the only key issue as U.S. President Joe Biden visited Ottawa this week. Increased tension with China was also an important topic, especially as the Trudeau government grapples with allegations of Beijing’s political interference. The West Block host Mercedes Stephenson spoke with David Cohen, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, on standing united against China’s threats.

More than 25 people are dead after powerful storms, and at least one tornado, tore through the southern U.S. overnight. It’s feared more people could be found dead as crews search for residents declared missing and believed to be trapped under the rubble. Brittany Rosen reports on the rescue efforts.

Medical assistance in dying (MAID) is one of the fiercest legal debates underway in Canada right now. It was supposed to be legal this month for those whose only condition is a mental illness, but the federal government delayed that eligibility expansion for at least another year. It comes after increasing pressure from psychiatrists, patient advocates and families – including a B.C. man who says his father was suicidal and still received a medically assisted death.

A First Nation community in British Columbia has become the first in the province to sign an agreement with the federal government over its own child welfare program. The goal is to reduce the number of Indigenous children in government care by keeping them in their own community. Victoria Femia reports on this historic agreement.

After shutting down across Canada 10 years ago, Zellers has made a comeback. It’s testing the waters with a dozen pop-ups located within Hudson’s Bay department stores. But the question remains, does the second act of this once-popular discount chain have staying power? Anne Gaviola reports.
