Global National: June 27, 2023 | Canada’s grocery giants not cooperative with pricing investigation

In tonight’s top story: A Competition Bureau assessment fuelled by ever-increasing prices at Canadian grocery stores links this inflation to a lack of competition in the industry. And according to experts, Canada’s three largest grocers — Loblaws, Sobeys and Metro — have not cooperated with these investigations. Collectively, the three earned more than $3.6 billion in profits. Mike Drolet reports.

Next, the federal government is planning to spend more than $1.5 billion over the next five years to help protect the nation against extreme weather events, including major storms and wildfires. Ottawa will help with funding, however, provinces and municipalities are expected to contribute. Global’s David Akin has the latest.

Also, there are developments on the Wagner Group's failed mutiny of Russia. Now that the mercenary group’s leader, who plotted the insurrection, has been banished to Belarus, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened his troops to either join Russia’s army, or Yevgeny Prigozhin in exile. Jackson Proskow reports.

Lastly, Eric Sorensen reports on Olivia Chow's victory in Toronto’s mayoral election Monday night. Chow, 66, gave her first public address on Tuesday, re-emphasizing her priorities in office.
