Tributes continue to pour in for Hazel McCallion, the former mayor of Mississauga, Ont., who died Sunday at the age of 101. Known by many as “Hurricane Hazel,” she was a trailblazer for women in politics and a mentor to many politicians. Touria Izri looks back on her decades-long leadership and her legacy.
There are widespread calls in the U.S. for Congress to reform policing after the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, who was severely beaten by police in Tennessee. But as Jennifer Johnson reports, Republicans are already pushing back on the calls for national change.
Meanwhile, there is renewed concern over aging Canadian naval vessels. The Royal Canadian Navy suggested that a parts failure causing flooding on board HMCS Summerside was a minor issue. The alarming incident was only revealed after Global News began asking questions. As Ross Lord reports, military analysts say taxpayers should expect more of these problems as Navy ships are stretched beyond their original purpose and life expectancy.

Also, there are more pleas for action and accountability in Canadian sports. In a new open letter, dozens of scholars are joining a chorus of calls for an independent inquiry into the abuse suffered by Canadian athletes. As Catherine Uquhart reports, they’re also demanding the federal government act on what they say is a system that is enabling the problem.
Artists from across the Maritimes took part in an ice sculpting festival in Nova Scotia. Organizers say the event was inspired by an annual winter carnival from decades ago, but it hasn’t happened since their winters became warmer. And as Megan King reports, the carvings are an ode to the carnival that once was.
