Georgian opposition MP Giorgi Vashadze was doused with water during a heated parliamentary debate on a controversial "foreign agent" law on Tuesday. Vashadze was delivering a speech against the bill, which critics say is Russian-inspired and authoritarian, when a pro-government MP splashed him with water.

Georgia's parliament voted that same day to override a previous presidential veto of the bill that has plunged the South Caucasus country into crisis, ignoring criticism from protesters and the West alike.

Outside the parliamentary building, Georgians expressed their anger and disappointment, describing the decision as “disastrous” and “obvious treason.” Protester Irma Gogiashvili said that it was “unbelievable that they could turn around Georgia's course and what we've been fighting for and working for 35 years just like this.”

In Washington, D.C., U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller condemned the decision to override the veto, adding that it effectively turns the bill into law. “The ruling party's actions and anti-Western rhetoric threaten Georgia's democratic trajectory, future economic security, European Union (EU) membership, and also put the U.S. Georgia relationship at risk," Miller said.
