Gaza: Why have hospitals become a focal point in this conflict?

The Israel Defence Forces continues to press forward with its ground offensive of Gaza, and has released pictures of what it claims is a Hamas arms cache under the Rantisi Children's Hospital.

The stash appears to include suicide vests, explosives and RPGs, though Hamas has denied the claims.

Despite the fact that hospitals should be protected under the law of armed conflict, they have become a focal point of this war.
