Gilad Erden, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN), told the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Friday that it had created a task force to establish hospitals in southern Gaza amid its ongoing ground invasion. On Oct. 12, Israel ordered some 1.1 million people in Gaza to move south ahead of a ground offensive.

“Israel is in advanced talks with the United Arab Emirates, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other European countries regarding the establishment of [a] field hospital and floating hospital ships,” Erdan said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyes also addressed the UNSC, saying that half of Gaza’s 36 hospitals and two-thirds of its primary healthcare centres were not functioning and those that were operating were way beyond their capacities, describing the health-care system as being “on its knees.”

Since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants, the WHO has verified more than 250 attacks on healthcare in Gaza and The West Bank, and said on Friday that there have been 25 attacks on healthcare in Israel. Israel has claimed Hamas hides weapons in tunnels under the hospitals.
