Fully vaccinated Canadian travellers can skip hotel quarantine, 14-day isolation come July | FULL

Canadian federal ministers and health officials announced Wednesday that starting in July, fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents flying back into the country will no longer require mandatory COVID-19 hotel quarantine upon arrival and no longer have to isolate for 14 days barring a positive COVID-19 test.

The change will apply to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have had a full course of a COVID-19 vaccine. Affected travellers will be required to take a COVID-19 test both before boarding their flight and upon arrival in Canada, and remain in isolation until the test comes back negative.

Under the new rules, expected to take effect next month, travellers looking to avoid quarantine will be required to have had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before travel.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said that Canadians will soon get "more of an idea about what they can expect in the weeks to come" when it comes to non-essential travel and border measures.

LeBlanc said the government is planning a first phase aimed at allowing fully vaccinated individuals who are authorized to enter the country to be able to cross the border without having to stay in a government-authorized accommodation. He added that case rates, hospitalizations and vaccinations are indicators the government will be watching to decide what changes can be made.
