Former negotiator with the Taliban: Darkest days are still ahead | Conflict Zone

Few people have more to lose under Taliban rule than women in Afghanistan.

Former Afghan MP and the first woman to be vice president of the country's parliament, Fawzia Koofi says the darkest days may still be ahead in Afghanistan. Koofi who took part in the Kabul government's negotiations with the Taliban says Afghans are now paying the consequences for the failed political decisions of the former Afghan government and world leaders. Koofi says the Taliban's lightning victory may have strengthened the hardliners in the group and that it appeared that the Taliban was repeating the mistakes of the past.

"They don't know how to govern, they know how to fight."

Koofi didn't spare her former government either, saying "corruption was one of the main reasons for the collapse of our security forces."

Under house arrest after the Taliban victory, Koofi fled the country, she joined Tim Sebastian from Geneva. The activist who campaigned for women's rights in Afghanistan said no one could understand the pain of fleeing except those who had to do the same.

"The situation in my country is heartbreaking," Fawzia Koofi told Tim Sebastian.
