Ford defends 95-year lease for spa, waterpark at Ontario Place

Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended the decision to enter into a 95-year lease with Therme for the controversial spa and waterpark set to be built at Ontario Place, saying they were committed to working with various partners such as the city of Toronto to create a space for Ontarians.

Asked how he could justify giving public lands to a private company, Ford said there was "no public money" in the deal with Therme, but did acknowledge a planned parking structure to be built at Ontario Place was being put up by the province, which could cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

But he added he would be "transparent" on costs, though would not give up a competitive advantage by revealing costs.

Ontario Place, which first opened in 1971, was closed to the public in 2012 after years of financial losses.
