At least 18 people were killed when a fire broke out at a fuel storage facility in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday.

The Plumpang fuel storage depot, owned and operated by state-run oil and gas company Pertamina, is located near the densely populated neighbourhood of Tanah Merah. It supplies 25 per cent of Indonesia’s fuel needs.

A preliminary investigation found the fire broke out after a pipe ruptured during heavy rainfall, possibly triggered by lightning, said Eko Kristiawan, area manager for the western part of Java. On Saturday, rescue crews continued to search through the remains of charred buildings for possible survivors. At least 16 are reported missing or separated from their family.

National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said at least 1,300 people were displaced as a result of the fire.
