The Canadian government has granted British Columbia's request for an amendment to their proposal for decriminalization of drug possession. Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health Ya'ara Saks gave the announcement on Tuesday, stating that the amendment is effective immediately.

"That means that the proposal that was put forward to us by the government of B.C. to amend the public consumption, public use consumption under the Section 56, the amendment has been granted," Saks said.

The decision is seen as a move towards addressing the opioid crisis and overdose deaths as a public health issue rather than a criminal one.

Sask expressed her frustration with the opposition saying "I really am frustrated that the opposition has made this a dehumanizing debate for those who actually need our help and that they don't recognize. We need a full suite of tools to actually save lives."
