Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the joint chiefs, said Thursday that F-16 fighter jets “clearly have role” as Ukraine prepares for an anticipated counteroffensive against Russia.

Milley made the comments alongside Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who earlier in the day said he hoped training for Ukrainian pilots on American-made F-16 jets would begin in the coming weeks.

The pair spoke following a virtual meeting of defense leaders from around the world who gathered to discuss their ongoing support for Ukraine. They were expected to discuss which countries would provide F-16s, and how and where Ukrainian pilots would be trained.

Milley also reacted to reports of U.S. military vehicles being used in a cross-border incursion in Belgorod, Russia, in which Ukraine has denied involvement.

“This is not a war between the U.S. and Russia,” Milley said, adding that the U.S. has made it clear it does not want to see American equipment being used for attacks on Russian soil.
