March 9, 2022: Ukraine evacuation routes, Oil rises toward $130, Companies leave Russia, U.S. rejects Poland's jet offer, Florida anti-LGBTQ bill

1. Russia announced a new ceasefire in Ukraine to let civilians flee besieged cities, but there were only limited signs of progress providing escape routes for hundreds of thousands of people trapped without medicine or fresh water.

2. Oil fell to around $125 a barrel as some investors took the view that the U.S. ban on Russian oil may not worsen a supply shock and the head of the International Energy Agency said the agency could further tap oil stocks to ease prices.

3. Coca-Cola and McDonald's are among the latest companies to halt sales in Russia where a senior member of the ruling party has warned that foreign firms which close down could see their operations nationalised.

4. The United States rejected a surprise offer by NATO ally Poland on Tuesday to transfer its Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets to a U.S. base in Germany as a way to replenish Ukraine's air force in its defense against invading Russian forces.

5. Florida lawmakers passed a Republican-backed bill that would prohibit classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity for many young students, rejecting criticism and student protests that characterized the measure as discriminatory and misguided.
