A recent conviction against former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was suspended by an Islamabad high court on Tuesday, according to his lawyer.

“Today, the judgement was suspended by two judges of the High Court, and soon, Allah ta'ala (God willing) … Imran Khan will be out of jail,” the attorney, Gauhar Khan said.

The former-cricket-star-turned-politician was sentenced to three years in prison on Aug. 5 following charges of corruption, where Khan allegedly sold state gifts during his tenure as prime minister between 2018 and 2022.

The conviction also resulted in a five-year ban from contesting elections by Pakistan’s election commission. Another national election will take place in 2024.

Despite his lawyer’s hopes, it is unclear if Tuesday’s suspension will result in Khan being able to walk out of his jail sentence.
