A Pakistani court extended the jail custody time of ex-prime minister Imran Khan by 14 days on Wednesday. Khan’s lawyer said the extension was put in place to investigate him on charges of leaking state secrets.

The former-cricket-star-turned-politician was sentenced to three years in prison on Aug. 5 following charges of corruption, where Khan allegedly sold state gifts during his tenure as prime minister between 2018 and 2022.
That sentence was suspended on Tuesday in high court, where officials said Khan could be released on bail, however, since he was also under remand in the state secrets case, the politician was banned from leaving.

“We are hopeful that we will get his bail before 13th of September as the bail is fixed on 2nd of September,” Khan’s lawyer, Intezar Hussian Panjutha, said Wednesday.

Khan’s conviction earlier this month resulted in a five-year ban from contesting elections by Pakistan’s election commission. Another national election will take place in 2024.
