The Ever Given resumed its journey to leave the Suez Canal on Wednesday after a deal was struck between the ship's representatives and the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) to allow for its release.

The ship, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the world, became stuck in the Suez Canal on March 23, 2021, as high winds were buffeting Egypt. After being dislodged, it was then held by the SCA under court order while the authority sought compensation from the ship's Japanese owner Shoei Kisen and its insurers.

With the ship now back at sea, it headed north across the Great Bitter Lake, where it had been moored since being refloated on March 29. It then joined the back of a northbound convoy, passing by the ceremony where the compensation agreement was signed.

According to Reuters, the container ship will be escorted by two tug boats and guided by two experienced pilots as it sails through the canal.

It was expected to reach Port Said after about six hours, where it will undergo a dive inspection of its hull before sailing to its next port to discharge its cargo.
