Speaking in front of the European Parliament on Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a ban on all Russian oil entering the European Union (EU).

“Let us be clear, it will not be easy because some member states are strongly dependent on Russian oil. But we simply have to do it,” she said.

Von der Leyen also said there are plans to remove Russia’s largest bank Sberbank from the international financial transaction system Swift, while also outlining a punishing new round of sanctions levied on Russia by the European Union.

She said the sanctions would be against high-ranking military officers and those who committed war crimes in Bucha and the siege of Mariupol.
