The European Union (EU) will bring further sanctions, including against some airlines, to combat Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko’s “perfidious” use of migrants, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced Monday.
EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to determine what those sanctions will look like.
“This is the attempt of an autocratic regime to manipulate people who they lured into a trap under false promises to destabilize its democratic neighbours. That won’t happen,” von der Leyen said.
Belarus has denied it is driving the ongoing migrant crisis at its border with Poland. Polish border guards have reported 5,100 attempted irregular crossings so far in November, compared to 120 in all of 2020.
