Joseph Borrell, the European Union (EU) foreign policy chief, on Monday announced a host of new sanctions against the Belarusian government in coordination with Canada, the U.S. and Britain.

The sanctions are a response to Minsk’s forced landing of a Ryanair plane last month to arrest journalist Roman Protasevich.

Sanctions were brought against 78 lawmakers, ministers and administration from President Alexander Lukashenko’s government, in a move applauded by opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

Tskikhanouskaya called for even greater Western efforts to punish Lukashenko, and press him to agree to free and fair elections. She said the Belarus leader was “escalating his violence” but that people were “not giving up.”
