An early morning house fire in Philadelphia, Penn., killed at least 13 people, including seven children on Wednesday.
Officials said there were four smoke detectors in the building, but that they failed to go off. The cause of the fire is not known, but Deputy Fire Chief Craig Murphy said the fire “was not necessarily considered suspicious.”
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney reacted to the devastating loss of life on Wednesday afternoon, calling it “one of the most tragic days in our city’s history."
Eight people managed to escape the building through one of the two exits, officials said. They said the number of dead could grow.
