Australia grappled with the aftermath of deadly thunderstorms on Wednesday that uprooted trees, damaged buildings and left tens of thousands without power after it battered the country’s east over the Christmas season.
At least nine people were killed across the country after severe thunderstorms lashed the states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland on Monday and Tuesday, bringing large hailstones and torrential rains. Strong winds blew off roofs and brought down trees in some of the worst-affected areas.
The youngest victim was a nine-year-old girl found after she was swept away in a flooded stormwater drain.
