"Doomsday itself": Mass burials begin in Turkey as earthquake death toll passes 19k

Earthquake survivors in Turkey began to bury the dead four days after what is becoming one of the worst disasters of the century, with the death toll surpassing 19,000 across Turkey and northern Syria.

"Doomsday itself," said quake survivor Huseyin Pekerel who was waiting to bid goodbye to his relatives. "Believe me, there is no family left without pain. Most people don't even know what to do."

Cold, hunger and despair gripped hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by the earthquakes, while hopes faded of many more people being found alive under the rubble of collapsed cities.
