Rescuers continued to dig through the ruins and rubble of flattened buildings on Sunday as the death toll from Friday's earthquake off the Turkish coast rose to 60 and the hope of finding survivors faded.

Earlier Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced 58 deaths in the coastal city of Izmir, while two teenagers died on the Greek island of Samos.

The Friday earthquake, which the Istanbul-based Kandilli Institute said had a magnitude of 6.9, was centred in the Aegean Sea, northeast of Samos.
