Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hit back Thursday at Disney's lawsuit against him, describing it as politically motivated and accused the company of lacking accountability and transparency.
"I don't think the suit has merit; I think it's political," DeSantis told reporters at a conference during a visit to Jerusalem.
The lawsuit filed by Disney accuses DeSantis' administration of "weaponizing its power to inflict political punishment" in a dispute over special provisions for the Disney World theme park in Florida.
The state passed legislation ending special conditions that gave Disney virtual autonomy in the district where the theme park is located. It came months after Disney criticized Florida for passing a law that banned classroom discussion of sexuality and gender identity with young children.
Columbia University political science professor Robert Y. Cohen told reporters in an interview it was "very unusual" to file a lawsuit with DeSantis "engaging in a very heavy-handed form of regulation of a company." He said if it goes to court, it would likely have to do with "the powers of the governor to do the kinds of things he's doing."
