An earthquake at 8.9, among the strongest the Richter scale has ever recorded, delivered chaos and devastation to one of the world's most highly-ordered societies. The resulting tsunami that swept across northern Japan left in its wake a death toll still spiralling, a population scattered and terrified. And worse, the horrifying prospect of mass radiation poisoning as Japan's state-of-the-art nuclear power plants succumbed to the more basic forces of nature.
