The U.K. will offer a COVID-19 booster shot to all adults aged 18 and older, expanding the eligibility for the third jabs to those 18-39 year old. The shot was already available to those 40 and older.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation made the announcement on Monday, accelerating the shots in light of concern over the newly identified Omicron variant.

The committee also said the gap between second and third doses could be shortened to three months from six months, in response to the changing risk posed by the variant of concern.

In addition, the committee announced that children between the ages of 12 and 15 could receive a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine at the standard dose of 30 micrograms 12 weeks after their first dose. Officials said this is the same schedule as for 16 and 17-year-olds.

Health Secretary Savid Javid also announced Monday that five cases of the Omicron variant had been reported so far in England with six confirmed in Scotland.
