British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that every eligible adult in England can now get their COVID-19 booster shot, as the country recorded its highest-ever case count since the beginning of the pandemic.

Eligible adults are those older than 18 who received their second COVID-19 vaccine dose at least three months ago.

The U.K. reported over 78,000 cases on Wednesday, the highest-ever with the Omicron variant surging and becoming the dominant variant.

The new variant of the virus has a doubling time of under two days in most regions in Britain, with its growth rate being notable in London and Manchester in particular.

More than 10,000 cases of the Omicron variant have been recorded, with at least 10 people hospitalized. One person has died after contracting the variant, which is set to become the dominant strain in London.
