Russia on Tuesday proposed to shut workplaces for a week at the start of November as its daily COVID-19 death toll hit a new record and a sharp rise in cases continued, leading to fresh calls from the Kremlin for people to get vaccinated.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova proposed that Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 be deemed non-working days to combat rising infections.

Moscow's mayor also announced four months of stay-home restrictions for unvaccinated people over age 60, beginning Oct. 25.

Many Russian regions plan to keep cafes, museums and other public venues open only to those who have recently recovered from COVID-19 or have proof of inoculation with a Russian vaccine or a negative test.

The country's COVID-19 task force reported 1,015 virus-related deaths on Tuesday, the highest single-day toll since the start of the pandemic, and 33,740 new infections, just shy of a record daily rise. Authorities are blaming the surge on a slow vaccination campaign.
