COVID-19: Ontario doctors warned of move to ICU to avoid “total collapse” of health system

Two Ontario hospitals are warning doctors they may have to give up their regular roles and move into intensive care units to avoid a “total collapse” of the health system due to rising COVID-19 hospitalization.

Mackenzie Health locations in Richmond Hill and Vaughan sent out an internal memo on Tuesday that physicians “will be asked to help even if this is an area in which they have little recent experience.”

The memo says the ICUs, emergency department and internal medicine wards are beyond capacity.

The province says it will add hundreds of critical care beds this week and free up pediatric units for adult patients amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
