Harmandeep Singh of Brampton, Ont. died in May of COVID-19, and his mother is now wondering whether an overwhelmed health-care system in Ontario’s Peel Region may have contributed to her son’s death.

Manmeen Oberoi says her son, who had recently been diagnosed with asthma, fell severely ill when he contracted COVID-19 along with his mother and father.

Singh was taken to the Brampton Civic Hospital by an ambulance.

“The nurse answered and she said his blood work and chest X-ray is done but there are so many patients before him and, ‘We are so busy and don’t know how many are going to die.’ Yes, these are the exact words and we just tried to be really courteous to them,” Oberoi said about her phone call with an emergency room nurse at the hospital.

Global’s Caryn Lieberman has the story.
