The White House COVID-19 response team and federal public health officials, including the country's top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci, held a press briefing Friday morning where they discussed the status of the U.S. federal government's COVID-19 pandemic response.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) director Dr. Rochelle Walensky on Friday said the United States has 379 confirmed cases of people diagnosed with the U.K. coronavirus variant across 29 states as of Jan. 27.

A new variant of the coronavirus emerged Thursday in the United States, posing yet another public health challenge in a country already losing more than 3,000 people to COVID-19 every day.

The mutated version of the virus, first identified in South Africa, was found in two cases in South Carolina. Public health officials said it’s almost certain that there are more infections that have not been identified yet.
