Toronto’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa reported 643 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, another record-breaking day of new cases.

Peel Region recorded 390 cases on Monday, while there were 217 recorded in York Region, 108 in Durham Region and 74 in Waterloo Region. All other public health units in Ontario reported under 70 new cases.

“The case counts are concerning in any measure, but quite variable from day to day,” Dr. de Villa said.

She added that the virus takes time to incubate, and “the infections we’re seeing lately occurred now a week or even two weeks ago.” Toronto and Peel Region entered the lockdown phase of the pandemic plan one week ago, and “contact between people has only just been reduced as a result of the measures,” she added.
