Thousands of trucks are still parked up on a motorway leading to the English port of Dover on Saturday waiting to cross into France.

More than 4,500 lorries, some of which had been stranded for days, did manage to cross the Channel on Dec. 25 but a huge backlog remains.

Ferry services between Dover and the French port of Calais have resumed, ending a blockade France had imposed for several days following the discovery of a new coronavirus variant in the UK.

British transport minister Grant Shapps said on Twitter on Friday that more than 10,000 coronavirus tests had been carried out on lorry drivers and only 24 of them had tested positive.

Britain has deployed hundreds of troops to help clear the queues of lorries waiting for the tests, checking drivers' documents.

On the M20 motorway leading to the port, local people organized drops by rope of food and other items for the stranded drivers.
