The medical director of the National Basketball Association (NBA), Dr. Leroy Sims, who managed the "bubble" season that allowed the league to finish in 2019-20, received the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday, joining other front-line workers in California receiving a Pfizer/BioNTech dose.

During the three-month stay at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., no players or coaches tested positive for COVID-19. The league's season had been interrupted in March by the COVID-19 pandemic, but eventually restarted this past summer and concluded in October.

Sims' vaccine comes days before the regular 2020-21 season is set to tip off, with some teams allowing a limited number of fans into their arenas. He said that the league will not be "jumping the line," stating that health-care workers and those who are most vulnerable must get the vaccine first. He said when the opportunity arises to roll it out to staff and players, they'll do so safely.
