Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among the speakers delivering remarks at the opening of COP15 in Montreal on Tuesday, which is a major international conference on preserving the world’s biodiversity.

“Canada stepped up on just a few months' notice to have this nature COP held here in Montreal so that together we find solutions. The clock is ticking, and we knew this conference couldn't wait until some other time,” Trudeau said, referencing that the event was originally planned for Kunming, China in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the schedule.

During his opening speech, Trudeau was briefly interrupted by Indigenous protesters from the audience, who held up banners and drums. Afterwards, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu and Quebec premier François Legault also delivered speeches during the opening ceremony.

COP15 brings together 196 countries to refresh the Convention on Biological Diversity and is seen as a crucial attempt to reach a global deal on saving the world’s ecosystems and the plants and animals that depend on them.
